Prof. John Licari publishes article on TenSyGrid in Think magazine of Malta

TenSyGrid project partner Prof. Ing. John Licari has published an article in Think Magazine, published by University of Malta, Issue 49 (April 2026), pages 62-65. The article, titled “TenSyGrid: Powering the Transition to 100% Renewable Energy,” provides an in-depth exploration of one of the most critical challenges facing modern power systems: how to reliably analyse and ensure the stability of future electricity grids dominated by power-electronic converters from renewable energy sources.

The article explains how electricity systems across the world are undergoing one of the most profound transformations since their inception. Driven by climate targets, energy security concerns, and rapid technological innovation, power grids are shifting toward ever higher shares of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. While this shift enables cleaner electricity, it also fundamentally changes how power systems behave, creating new challenges for stability analysis that traditional tools were not designed to address.

The TenSyGrid project tackles this emerging problem head-on by developing a new generation of tensor-based analytical methods designed specifically for electricity grids powered almost entirely by power-electronic converters. The article highlights why today’s power system tools are reaching their limits, as traditional analytical methods were developed for grids dominated by large synchronous generators, whereas modern converter-based resources are programmable, fast, and highly nonlinear.
