TenSyGrid showcases advances in converter-dominated power systems at IFAC World Congress 2026

TenSyGrid partners presented new research, strengthened international links and contributed to a specialist session at the 23rd IFAC World Congress, held from 23 to 28 August 2026 at BEXCO in Busan, Republic of Korea.

The Congress brought together the global automatic-control community on an unprecedented scale and TenSyGrid is proud to participate in this landmark event. According to official IFAC information, the event received more than 4,200 submissions from 90 countries. More than 3,000 technical papers were accepted for presentation across 37 parallel tracks, while registrations exceeded 4,000 participants from over 70 countries—making it the largest IFAC World Congress to date.

TenSyGrid was represented by Carlos Cateriano Yáñez, Project Coordinator at the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES; Teresa Wong of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences; and John Licari and Alexander Micallef of the University of Malta.

Carlos Cateriano Yáñez co-chaired the open invited track session “Tensor Methods for Modelling and Control.” The track was co-organised with TenSyGrid partner Gerwald Lichtenberg of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and TenSyGrid Advisory Board member Kim Batselier of Delft University of Technology, who chaired the session.

During the session, Teresa Wong presented the TenSyGrid paper “A Numerical Multilinearization Approach for Dynamic Stability Analysis of Converter-Dominated Power Systems.” The paper was co-authored by, among others, Advisory Board member Byungkwon Park of Soongsil University, together with TenSyGrid partners Carlos Cateriano Yáñez, John Licari and Gerwald Lichtenberg.

The paper introduces a numerical multilinearization method that uses sparse-grid quadrature to approximate nonlinear dynamic models while limiting the computational burden in higher-dimensional systems. Applied to a grid-forming inverter and diesel-generator system, the resulting multilinear surrogate closely reproduces the nonlinear frequency and electrical responses following a major load increase, supporting efficient stability analysis of converter-dominated grids.

As IFAC’s flagship triennial event, the World Congress brings together scientists and engineers from academia and industry and provides a broad overview of current developments in automatic control and systems engineering. The 2026 programme included technical sessions, plenary and semi-plenary talks, tutorials, workshops, competitions and specialist forums.

Participation gave TenSyGrid an important international platform to present its progress and discuss its research on converter-dominated power systems with experts from across the control community. The Congress also enabled direct exchange with Advisory Board members from Delft University of Technology and Soongsil University, strengthening scientific dialogue and opening opportunities for future collaboration.
